Puppy Rice-Cooker Batch (Turkey, Rice & Vegetables)
For the Jack terrier mix · a topper, about a quarter of each meal, alongside a "complete and balanced for growth" food · 10-cup rice cooker · 5–6 days
Ingredients
- 1 cup white or brown rice, rinsed
- 450 g (1 lb) lean ground turkey or chicken, raw
- 1½ cups diced carrot, green beans or plain pumpkin (not pie filling)
- 2½ cups water (3 cups for brown rice)
- 1 tbsp fish oil or olive oil, after cooking
- NEVER ADD: onion, garlic, chives, grapes or raisins, chocolate, xylitol (some peanut butters), macadamia nuts, salt or seasoning, cooked bones
Method
- Rice and water into the cooker. Crumble the raw meat over the top and scatter the vegetables on it.
- Cook on the normal setting for the rice you used (white or brown).
- Stir well and check the meat is cooked through, with no pink left.
- Cool a little, then stir in the oil. Cool fully before serving.
- Fridge 3–4 days; freeze the rest in daily portions.
- Why a topper: a growing puppy needs calcium and phosphorus in balance, and meat, rice and vegetables are badly short of calcium. As the whole diet it needs a balancing supplement made for homemade puppy food (e.g. Balance IT, or one the vet recommends), dosed to this recipe.
- Portions depend on age and weight; ask the vet, or size the topper as about a quarter of each meal.
